All They Need For Christmas… Are Shoes
Chad is among the poorest countries of the world, ranking 170 of 177 countries in the United Nation’s 2007 Human Development Index. This low income food deficit (LIFD) nation is credited with alarming rates of global malnutrition, infectious diseases threaten the lives of millions of persons especially women and children. Today Chad is home to an estimated 10.8 million people, 55% of whom live below the poverty line, earning less than 1 U.S dollar per day . According to IMF (2007) the human development and living standard indicators are well below the averaged for Sub-Saharan Africa.
Kasny Recon Inc. (Shea Touch’s mother company) has been involved in sustainable harvesting and processing of shea nuts into raw pure butter in southern Chad for four years. While we are proud of our environmentally friendly, and socially responsible factory established a few miles outside the town of Kelo, we continuously renew our commitment to fighting poverty and raising the living standards of the rural poor, the custodians of the precious resource our business depend upon.
The super pure Shea butter used in all Shea Touch products is produced in Kelo, one of the major towns in the Southwestern region of Chad called Tandjile. The majority of the inhabitants of this region remain desperately poor despite tremendous human and natural resource potential which must rightfully benefit the locals. While we are committed to cutting edge research to develop and perfect health body care products to meet the needs of our customers, we are equally determined to reinvest back in the local communities to improve the lives of many.
To do so, we are taking advantage of this Holiday season which is a season to show our love, to share the blessing we are so fortunate to have. Many children in Kelo and the surrounding areas can only dream of appropriate clothing, shoes, books and many other basic necessities . . . basic essentials some take for granted.
You can help Shea Touch to make some of those dreams come true. Any purchase you make of $45 or more will allow us to purchase one pair of shoes for a child in desperate need. By teaming up with Fondation Bobo, we are insuring that the needs identification is accurate and that OUR gifts (yours & Shea Touch) will reach the correct child’s feet. Fondation Bobo is a local nonprofit organization registered and operating in Chad that has been working in rural areas and has experience in community based development initiatives.
